Bio-dynamic farming processes

Irish Botanica® Echinacea and Valerian are both grown bio-dynamically on an organic herb farm with a Good Manufacturing Practice licence.

Bio-dynamic farming is a form of organic farming originally developed in the early 1920s by Dr. Rudolf Steiner. Bio-dynamic farming aims to use a holistic, ethical and ecological approach to the agricultural processes. Today, the bio-dynamic movement encompasses thousands of successful gardens, farms and agricultural operations in a wide variety of ecological and economic settings and it continues to grow and evolve around the world.

Bio-dynamic farmers strive to create a diversified, balanced farm ecosystem that generates health and fertility from within the farm itself. Fermented manure, minerals and herbs are used to help restore and harmonize the vital life forces of the farm and to enhance the nutrition, quality and flavour of the food both grown and raised. Bio-dynamic practitioners strive to work in cooperation with the influences of the wider cosmos on soil, plant and animal health.

Good Manufacturing Practices

Irish Botanica® Echinacea and Valerian are grown on a farm which has a Good Manufacturing Practices License.

Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) refer to guidelines laid down by agencies which control authorization and licensing for manufacture and sale of food, drug products, and active pharmaceutical products. These guidelines are in place to provide minimum requirements that a pharmaceutical or a food product manufacturer must meet while manufacturing drugs or food products. This ensures that the products produced are of high quality and do not pose any risk to the consumer. Good manufacturing practice guidelines provides guidance for manufacturing, testing, and quality assurance in order to ensure that drug product is safe for human consumption.

How it’s Made

Irish Botanica® Echinacea and Valerian are grown, manufactured and bottled on the same bio-dynamic farm, read on to learn about the production processes.

The plants are bio-dynamically grown, and after 2 – 4 years the roots of the plants are harvested. Irish Botanica® only uses the root of both the Echinacea and Valerian plant, the part most favoured by medical herbalists, because the root contains the essence of the plant with the most biologically active ingredients. The root is then washed and water and alcohol are added to make it into a tincture. This is then pressed and the tincture is extracted. This entire process from harvest to product takes place on the same bio-dynamic farm ensuring that you have consistent treatment results.
